In a notable decision announced on Sunday, new Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey revealed that he has withdrawn his name from consideration for Canada’s basketball team in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Edey, selected ninth overall by Memphis, has chosen to focus on his burgeoning NBA career.
Zach Edey, a towering 7-foot-4 former Purdue standout, made history as the first player in over four decades to win The Associated Press’ men’s college basketball player of the year award in consecutive seasons. His decision to forgo the opportunity to represent Canada was not taken lightly.
“This was a very tough decision for me,” Edey said in his statement. “I’ve been training nonstop since last summer, first to win a national title at Purdue and now to make an impact in the NBA. My focus must be on preparing myself for the challenges and responsibilities that come with being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies.”
Edey emphasized that representing Canada remains a significant aspiration, and he vowed to be the team’s most ardent supporter from afar. Rowan Barrett, the general manager of Canada Basketball’s senior men’s program, expressed understanding and support for Edey’s decision.
“Although we were hopeful that Zach would join our training camp, we understand and back him in making this tough decision,” Barrett remarked “We look forward to his future participation with the team.”
Standing among the NBA’s tallest players, Edey faces the task of proving his game’s compatibility with the professional level. The 2023-24 season will see him alongside other towering figures like San Antonio’s Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, Houston’s Boban Marjanovic, and Phoenix’s Bol Bol, all listed at 7-foot-3 or taller.
Edey’s withdrawal is part of a broader challenge for Canada’s basketball team as they prepare for the Paris Olympics. Recently, Barrett also announced that Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins would not participate, attributing the decision to mutual agreement between Wiggins and the team. Wiggins was among the 20 players invited to camp for Olympic roster consideration.
